Bluebird Montessori Overview

We offer a foundational authentic Montessori Program augmented by Life and Community extracurricular programs for all age groups.

Bluebird has two classrooms for every age group and one preschool room for each mixed age grouping: 0-1, 1-2, 2-3, and a preschool room for 3-5-year-olds. Each classroom is guided by North American Montessori Center (NAMC) certified teacher and assistant teacher.

Bluebird’s authentic Montessori program is a child-centered educational approach that fosters independence, curiosity, and a love of learning. Children choose activities that interest them in a prepared environment with hands-on materials, progressing at their own pace. Mixed-age classrooms promote peer learning, while teachers act as guides, providing individualized support. The focus is on practical life skills, sensory experiences, and self-directed learning across subjects, nurturing intrinsic motivation and respect for self, others, and the environment.

Authentic Montessori Distinct Learning Areas at Bluebird

The Montessori approach, much like any science, has its own set of vocabulary and terminology.

All Bluebird classrooms include five distinct areas: practical life, sensorial, math, language, and cultural studies.

Practical Life

Practical Life in Montessori is a purposeful activity, which develops motor control and coordination, develops independence, concentration, and a sense of responsibility. The exercises in practical life cover two main areas of development: care for self and care for the environment.

Sensorial learning

Sensorial learning is a teaching approach that stimulates the child’s five senses: taste, touch, smell, sight, and hearing. This allows children to use their senses to explore and understand the world around them.

Language Development

Language development is designed primarily to teach children the intricacies of written and spoken language. A firm grasp of writing and speaking will allow students to progress with their learning. Students use language materials to explore letters, sounds, handwriting, and eventually spelling and writing.

Mathematics

Mathematics materials help develop the child’s innate “mathematical mind” as he manipulates concrete materials, which isolate a specific concept in preparation for later abstract work. The materials lay the foundation for arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.

Cultural Studies

Cultural Studies expose children to different people and their cultures. The cultural area is divided into geography, history, nature, and science. These lessons include how people have adapted to different climates, their homes, clothing, food, and customs. Through continent and cultural studies, children learn about the interconnectedness of all life on earth.

Exploring Our World Program

At Bluebird Montessori, our Exploring Our World Program is designed to enrich the educational experience by connecting children with their community through immersive, hands-on learning. This program offers opportunities for students to engage with their surroundings, both inside and outside the classroom, ensuring that learning goes beyond traditional educational settings.

Our students participate in field trips to various locations in Downtown Overland Park, such as local businesses, nature reserves, and cultural landmarks. These outings provide real-world learning experiences that help children connect classroom concepts to the world around them. Each field trip is thoughtfully planned to align with the Montessori curriculum, deepening children’s understanding of subjects like geography, science, and community life.

Additionally, the Exploring Our World Program brings community members into the school to engage with students directly. We host guest speakers such as firefighters, musicians, artists, and other local professionals who share their expertise and inspire the children. These interactive sessions allow children to ask questions, learn from experts, and gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse roles that people play in their community.

By immersing children in authentic, real-life experiences, the Exploring Our World Program nurtures curiosity, responsibility, and a sense of connection. This program is a core element of our approach to holistic development, helping children build the confidence and understanding needed to become engaged and thoughtful citizens of the world.
